The best polo t-shirts for men in India: how to pick one

Blue Polo | Supima Cotton T-Shirt for Men

Most polos look alike on a product page. The differences show after ten washes: a collar that curls, a placket that waves, white that turns see-through, a fit that shrinks. Here is what separates a polo that lasts from one that does not, and a checklist you can run on any polo before you buy it online.

The short answer

The best polo for most men in India is made from long-staple cotton (such as Supima), weighs about 200–240 GSM, has a ribbed collar that holds its shape, and is made from pre-washed fabric so it does not shrink. Check the garment measurements, not just the size label, and compare price per wear rather than price on the tag.

1. The cotton

Cotton fibre length decides how soft a polo feels and how well it ages. Short-staple cotton has more loose fibre ends, so it fuzzes and pills. Extra-long-staple cotton such as Supima spins a smoother, stronger yarn that stays soft and keeps its colour. Look for an exact composition on the label: "100% Supima cotton" tells you far more than "premium cotton".

2. The weight (GSM)

GSM is fabric weight in grams per square metre. Many polos sold online are 160–180 GSM: light, but prone to clinging and losing shape. Around 200–240 GSM a polo drapes cleanly, the collar stands up and white stays opaque. Heavier polos feel warmer, so they suit offices, evenings and travel more than midday sun. See what GSM means and the 240 GSM polo.

3. The knit

Piqué, the dotted texture of most sports polos, is airy and casual. Interlock is smooth on both faces, so it looks dressier and keeps a cleaner surface as it ages. If you want one polo that works at the office and at the weekend, interlock is the safer pick. More in interlock vs piqué.

4. The collar and placket

  • Ribbed collar. A knitted rib collar springs back after washing; a collar cut from the body fabric tends to curl.
  • Placket. It should lie flat, with neat stitching and buttons that sit straight.
  • Cuffs. Ribbed cuffs hold the sleeve close to the arm instead of flaring.

5. Shrinkage and fit

Ask whether the fabric is pre-washed or pre-shrunk. If it is not, expect a polo to lose length after the first few washes. Then compare the garment's chest, shoulder and length with a polo you already like: sizes vary a lot between brands. Our t-shirt size guide shows how to measure one at home.

6. Price per wear

A ₹500 polo worn ten times before it looks tired costs ₹50 a wear. A better polo worn a hundred times costs less per wear even at several times the price. If you wear polos to work every week, quality pays for itself. See is Supima cotton worth the price.

7. Returns and exchanges

Buying online, check the exchange window and who pays for it before you order. A clear size chart and an easy exchange matter more than a deep discount.

The checklist

  1. Exact fibre named on the label (long-staple or Supima).
  2. Fabric weight stated, ideally 200–240 GSM.
  3. Knit stated: interlock for smart, piqué for sporty.
  4. Ribbed collar and cuffs.
  5. Pre-washed or pre-shrunk fabric.
  6. Garment measurements for every size.
  7. A simple exchange policy.

Polo buying questions

Which fabric is best for polo t-shirts?

Long-staple cotton, such as Supima, in an interlock or piqué knit. It is soft, breathable and pills less than regular cotton.

What GSM is good for a polo t-shirt?

About 200–240 GSM. Lighter polos cling and lose shape; heavier ones hold the collar and drape cleanly.

Is interlock or piqué better for a polo?

Interlock is smoother and dressier; piqué is airier and sportier. For one polo that does both office and weekend, choose interlock.

How do I stop a polo collar curling?

Buy polos with a knitted rib collar, wash cool, and dry them flat or on a hanger with the collar shaped by hand.

How much should a good polo cost in India?

Compare price per wear rather than the tag. A well-made cotton polo you wear every week for years costs less per wear than a cheap one replaced each season.
