GSM stands for grams per square metre. It is the weight of the fabric, and it tells you more about how a t-shirt will look and wear than almost any other number on the label. Here is what different GSMs feel like and which to choose.
GSM meaning in clothes
Cut a square metre of the fabric and weigh it: that is its GSM. A higher GSM means more yarn in the same area, so the fabric is denser, more opaque and holds its shape better. A lower GSM is lighter and airier, but can turn see-through and lose shape sooner.
140 vs 180 vs 240 GSM
| Weight | Typical garment | How it wears |
|---|---|---|
| 140–160 GSM | Budget tees and multipacks | Light and airy; whites often show through and shape goes quickly |
| 180 GSM | Premium everyday tees, like Lokee | Soft and breathable, holds its shape for daily wear |
| 200–220 GSM | Standard piqué polos | More body; a textured face that shows wear over time |
| 240 GSM | Heavyweight interlock polos, like Gutmann | Structured drape, a collar that holds, opaque in white |
Typical market ranges, not fixed standards.
Best GSM for a t-shirt in India
- Everyday wear in warm weather: around 180 GSM. Substantial enough not to turn see-through, light enough to stay comfortable.
- Polos for the office, evenings and travel: 220–240 GSM for a collar that keeps its shape. A 240 GSM polo is slightly warmer, which suits air-conditioned offices.
- Layering under a jacket: 160–180 GSM keeps bulk down.
Why GSM isn't everything
Two tees with the same GSM can feel completely different. The fibre and the knit matter as much as the weight. Extra-long-staple Supima cotton makes a smoother, stronger fabric than regular cotton, and an interlock knit feels denser and cleaner than piqué at the same weight. GSM questions
What does GSM mean in a t-shirt?
Grams per square metre: the weight of the fabric. Higher GSM means denser, more opaque fabric.
Is 180 GSM good for a t-shirt?
Yes. 180 GSM is a good everyday weight: soft and breathable, but not see-through.
Is 240 GSM too hot for summer?
It is warmer than 180 GSM. A 240 GSM polo suits air-conditioned offices, evenings and travel; for hot days outdoors, a 180 GSM tee is cooler.
Does higher GSM mean better quality?
Not on its own. Fibre and knit matter too. A 180 GSM Supima tee can outlast a heavier tee made from short-staple cotton.
