A tee that fits in the shop and is a size smaller after three washes is one of the most common t-shirt complaints in India. So is black that turns grey by the end of summer. Both are mostly decided before you buy. Here is why it happens and what to look for.
Buy t-shirts made from long-staple cotton whose fabric was washed before sewing, then wash them cool and dry them in the shade. Pre-washed fabric has already done most of its shrinking; long fibres hold dye and resist the fuzz that makes colours look dull.
Why cotton t-shirts shrink
- Stretched yarn relaxes. Knitting pulls cotton yarn tight. The first wash lets it relax back, and the garment gets shorter and narrower.
- Heat makes it worse. Hot water and tumble dryers shrink cotton far more than a cool wash.
- Unwashed fabric. If the fabric was cut and sewn without being washed first, all of that shrinking happens in your machine.
Why t-shirts fade and look old
- Sun. Strong Indian sun on the washing line fades dark colours faster than the wash itself.
- Hot water and harsh detergent strip dye with every wash.
- Fuzz and pilling. Short fibres work loose and form a fuzzy surface. It scatters light, so the colour looks dull even when the dye is still there.
What to look for when you buy
| Look for | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Pre-washed or pre-shrunk fabric | Most shrinking has happened before the tee is sewn |
| Extra-long-staple cotton, such as Supima | Fewer loose fibre ends, so less fuzz and pilling, and colour holds longer |
| An exact composition | "95% Supima, 5% elastane" tells you what you are getting; elastane also helps a tee spring back |
| A stated fabric weight (GSM) | Very light fabric loses shape faster; see what GSM means |
| A clear exchange policy | If the size is wrong, you can change it |
On our own spec sheet, Supima shows low pilling after 30 washes and holds its colour after 20, where a typical ₹599 tee shows visible pilling and fading.
How to keep a t-shirt from shrinking or fading
- Wash cool, inside out.
- Dry in the shade, not in direct sun.
- Skip the tumble dryer. It is the fastest way to shrink any cotton.
- Iron on low heat.
- No bleach, even on whites.
The full routine is in how to wash Supima cotton.
How Abraca deals with it
Every panel of an Abraca Supima cotton t-shirt is washed before it is sewn, so the fit you get is the fit it keeps with normal, cool washing. The fibre is USA-grown Supima: Lokee round necks are 95% Supima with 5% elastane in 180 GSM jersey, and Gutmann polos are 100% Supima in 240 GSM interlock. If a size is wrong, there is a 7-day exchange.
Shrinking and fading questions
Why does my t-shirt shrink after washing?
Knitting stretches the yarn, and the first wash lets it relax. Hot water and dryers make it shrink more. Fabric washed before sewing has already done most of that.
Do Supima cotton t-shirts shrink?
Like any cotton, they can in hot water or a dryer. Abraca washes every panel before sewing, so with a cool wash the fit stays the same.
How do I stop black t-shirts fading?
Wash cool and inside out, and dry in the shade. Sun fades dark colours faster than washing does.
Should I buy a size up in case it shrinks?
Not with pre-washed fabric. Buy your true size from the brand's size chart, measured in inches or centimetres.
Can a shrunk t-shirt be stretched back?
Sometimes a little: soak it in cool water with hair conditioner, then gently stretch and dry it flat. It rarely gets all the way back, so prevention is better.
