How to remove yellow sweat stains from white t-shirts

Yellow underarm stains are the main reason white t-shirts get thrown away early, especially in Indian summers. The good news: most can be lifted at home with things already in your kitchen, and almost all of them can be prevented.

The short answer

Soak the stain in cool water with oxygen bleach (or rub in a paste of baking soda and water, or a little white vinegar), leave it for 30 minutes to a few hours, then wash cool as usual and dry in the shade. Do not use chlorine bleach or hot water, which can set the yellow in for good.

Why sweat stains turn yellow

Sweat on its own is mostly water and salt. The yellow comes when it mixes with the aluminium compounds in many antiperspirants and with skin oils, and builds up in the fabric over several wears. Heat from a hot wash, a dryer or an iron then sets it.

Method 1: oxygen bleach soak

  1. Dissolve oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate, sold as "oxi" stain removers) in a bucket of cool to lukewarm water, following the pack.
  2. Soak the t-shirt for one to six hours.
  3. Rub the stain gently between your fingers, then wash as usual.

This is the gentlest effective option for white cotton, and safe for most whites.

Method 2: baking soda paste

  1. Mix baking soda with a little water into a thick paste.
  2. Work it into the stain with an old toothbrush, from the inside of the shirt.
  3. Leave it for an hour, then wash as usual.

Method 3: white vinegar

Dab undiluted white vinegar onto the stain, or soak the underarms in one part vinegar to four parts cool water for 30 minutes, then wash. Vinegar helps dissolve deodorant build-up. Do not mix vinegar with bleach.

What not to do

  • No chlorine bleach. It can react with the stain and turn it darker yellow.
  • No hot water or dryer until the stain has gone; heat sets it.
  • No hard scrubbing. It roughens cotton and causes pilling.
  • Do not iron a stained shirt.

How to prevent sweat stains

  • Let deodorant dry fully before you dress, and use less of it.
  • Wash white tees after every wear in summer; do not let sweat sit in the fabric.
  • Rinse the underarms in cool water if you cannot wash straight away.
  • Dry whites in the shade, not strong sun, and keep them out of a hot dryer.

Does fabric matter?

Yes. Smooth, long-staple cotton such as Supima holds less residue on its surface than fuzzy short-staple cotton, so stains come out more easily, and the fabric survives regular washing without wearing thin. A heavier white also shows marks less: see white t-shirts that aren't see-through.
