Supima vs organic cotton: what's the difference?

Supima and organic cotton are often compared as if they were rivals. They answer different questions. Supima tells you what kind of cotton fibre you are buying; organic tells you how the cotton was grown. Here is what each label means, how they differ in the things you can feel, and how to choose.

The short answer

Supima is a variety: extra-long-staple American Pima cotton, grown only in the USA and sold under a licensed, traceable name. Organic is a farming standard: cotton grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, from non-GM seed, and certified. Most organic cotton is regular short-staple cotton, so for softness and durability Supima usually comes out ahead. A cotton can be both, but organic Supima is rare.

What Supima means

Supima is American Pima, an extra-long-staple cotton with fibres of about 35 mm, against roughly 22–25 mm for regular upland cotton. It is under 1% of the world's cotton, grown only in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas, and only licensed brands may use the Supima® name. Longer fibres spin a finer, stronger yarn, which is why Supima feels smoother and pills less. More in what is Supima cotton.

What organic cotton means

Organic describes the farming, not the fibre. Certified organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, from seed that is not genetically modified. Two certifications are common on clothes: GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), which also covers how the fabric is processed, and OCS (Organic Content Standard), which tracks how much organic fibre a product contains. Neither says anything about fibre length, so organic cotton can be short-staple or long-staple.

Which feels better?

What you feel is decided mostly by fibre length, then by the yarn, the knit and the fabric weight. An organic t-shirt made from short-staple cotton feels much like any other cotton tee of the same weight. A Supima t-shirt feels smoother from the first wear and keeps that feel wash after wash. See Supima vs regular cotton for the measured differences.

Which is better for the planet?

Neither label tells the whole story. Organic farming avoids synthetic pesticides and fertilisers. A t-shirt that stays good for years also means fewer replacements, and that is where long-staple cotton helps. Whatever the label, buying fewer, better basics and washing them cool does more than any single tag.

How to check the label

  • Supima: look for the Supima® tag and an exact composition such as "100% Supima cotton". "Pima" alone guarantees nothing: see Supima vs Pima.
  • Organic: look for a GOTS or OCS logo with a certificate or licence number you can look up.
  • Words like "natural", "eco" or "premium cotton" on their own are not certifications.

What Abraca uses

Abraca chose Supima for how a t-shirt feels and how long it lasts. Gutmann polos are 100% USA-grown Supima in a 240 GSM interlock; Lokee round necks are 95% Supima with 5% elastane in a 180 GSM jersey. Every panel is washed before it is sewn.

Supima and organic cotton questions

Is Supima cotton organic?

Not by default. Supima is a variety of cotton; organic is a way of growing it. Only Supima that is certified organic is organic, and it is rare.

Is organic cotton softer than Supima?

Usually not. Most organic cotton is short-staple, and fibre length is what makes cotton feel soft and smooth.

Which lasts longer, Supima or organic cotton?

Supima, in most cases. Its longer fibres make a stronger yarn that pills less and keeps its colour longer.

How do I know cotton is really organic?

Look for GOTS or OCS certification with a certificate number. "Natural" or "eco" on their own are not certifications.

Is Supima the same as Pima?

Supima is a licensed brand of American Pima. "Pima" alone is a generic name with no guarantee. See Supima vs Pima.
