Many t-shirt labels now read "95% cotton, 5% elastane". Elastane, also sold as spandex or Lycra, is a stretch fibre. A little of it changes how a tee fits and how it holds its shape, with a couple of trade-offs worth knowing.
A small amount of elastane, around 3–5%, makes a cotton t-shirt stretch with you and spring back into shape, so it does not bag at the neck or elbows. It is still mostly cotton, so it stays soft and breathable. Choose 100% cotton if you want maximum airflow and a crisp, structured look; choose cotton with a little elastane for movement and a cleaner fit through the day.
What elastane does
- Stretch. The tee moves with you when you reach, sit or lift.
- Recovery. It returns to shape after stretching, so necklines and hems stay neat.
- Fit. It can sit closer to the body without feeling tight.
Cotton vs cotton-elastane compared
| 100% cotton | 95% cotton, 5% elastane | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Soft, natural | Soft, with a slight stretch |
| Breathability | Highest | Very good; slightly less than pure cotton |
| Shape after wear | Can relax and bag over the day | Springs back |
| Look | Crisper, more structured | Smoother, closer fit |
| Care | Easy | Avoid high heat |
Is elastane bad for summer?
At 5%, the fabric is still 95% cotton, so it breathes well. Heavily stretchy fabrics with 10–20% elastane, such as gym wear, feel warmer. For an everyday tee in Indian heat, a small amount of elastane in a light cotton jersey is comfortable. See the best t-shirt fabric for summer.
How to care for cotton-elastane
- Wash cool; heat weakens elastane over time.
- Skip the tumble dryer and dry in the shade.
- Iron on low, inside out, if you iron at all.
- Avoid chlorine bleach, which damages elastane.

When 100% cotton is the better choice
For polos and structured pieces, pure cotton gives a crisper drape and a collar that sits firmly. That is why many premium polos are 100% cotton while everyday round necks often include a little stretch.
What Abraca uses, and why
The Lokee round neck is 95% Supima cotton with 5% elastane in a 180 GSM jersey: it moves with you and keeps its neckline, for men and women. The Gutmann polo is 100% Supima in a 240 GSM interlock, for a structured look and a collar that holds its shape.
Cotton and elastane questions
What does 95% cotton, 5% elastane mean?
The t-shirt is almost all cotton, with a little stretch fibre so it moves with you and springs back into shape.
Is cotton with elastane better than 100% cotton?
It keeps its shape better and fits more smoothly; 100% cotton breathes slightly more and looks crisper. It depends on the garment.
Is elastane the same as spandex or Lycra?
Yes. Elastane is the generic name; spandex is the common US name and Lycra is a brand.
Does elastane make a t-shirt hot?
At 5%, barely. The fabric is still mostly cotton and breathes well.
How do I wash cotton-elastane t-shirts?
Cool water, no tumble dryer, no chlorine bleach, and a low iron if needed.
