A good women's t-shirt should feel soft on the skin, stay opaque, keep its shape at the neckline and fit the shoulders without pulling across the bust. Most tees get one or two of those right. Here is what to look for so you get all of them.
Choose a women's-cut round neck in long-staple cotton such as Supima, about 160–180 GSM, with a little elastane for shape. Check the garment measurements at the bust, shoulder and length against a tee you love, and buy pre-washed fabric so it keeps its fit. Start with white and black, then add colour.
Fabric that feels good all day
Long-staple cotton is smoother against the skin than regular cotton, breathes in the heat and stays soft through washing. A small amount of elastane, around 5%, helps the tee move with you and recover its shape. See cotton vs cotton-elastane and the best fabric for summer.
The right weight
Around 160–180 GSM is light for Indian weather but heavy enough to stay opaque, so it does not show your bra or cling. Lighter tees often look sheer, especially in white. See white t-shirts that aren't see-through.
Getting the fit right
- Shoulder: the seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder, not down your arm.
- Bust: it should skim, not pull across the front.
- Waist: a women's cut is gently shaped, so it does not look boxy.
- Length: to the hip for wearing out; shorter if you tuck.
Measure a tee you like and compare: see the size guide.
Colours to start with
White and black go with everything. Blue is easy for work and weekends. Green and red add colour while staying plain and wearable.
How to style it
- With jeans or trousers and sneakers for every day.
- Half-tucked into a skirt or wide-leg trousers.
- Under a blazer or shirt-jacket for work.
Care
Wash cool and inside out, skip the tumble dryer, and dry in the shade so colours last. See how to wash Supima cotton.
